Book Burning, June 1918 (MCHS-Anuta Research Center)
Thank you to all who attended our book signing/Christmas party on December 22nd. It was a great time--so loud you couldn't hear the phone ring!
NEW BOOK by ROSS PARCELS On July 31, 1918, at Hill 212 near Chateau-Thierry, France, Company L, 125th Infantry Regiment in the 32nd (Red Arrow) Division of the American Expeditionary Forces had as their baptism of fire to attack uphill against German machine gun nests during a crucial battle of World War 1. By day’s end, at least 33 men in a company of 200-215 soldiers had been killed: nine from Menominee, Michigan, alone. In Onward Through Hell, Ross Parcels explores what happened to Company L on that day and its aftermath, even including an essay on the National Archives’ “burial case records” of the Menominee soldiers killed at Hill 212. Onward also explores anti-German sentiment and propaganda in Menominee in the summer of 1918, when the town organized a massive book burning and waited anxiously for news of “their boys.” Meticulously researched, thoughtful, and replete with accounts of the soldiers who fought at Hill 212, Onward Through Hell at once counters the heroic view of the battle that has come down to us and is itself a fitting memorial to Company L.
Parcels holds master's degrees in history from the University of Michigan and in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
